For those looking up from the signs in hopes of a distant reality, it’s as if the panorama has been moved indoors and enclosed by encircling white walls. So that’s how far we might see on a clear day. I mingle with those shuffling towards the summit path and soon find myself in a fenced circle where long, low signs illustrate and label outlines of distant islands and mountains as far off as Mt. You won’t be able to see anything, but some signs up there will tell you what you would be seeing if it was a clear day.” His passengers drift in either direction. The guide waves his right arm straight ahead into the haze-“We passed the gift shop on the way in and it’s off in that direction, but”-his arm jerks a little further to the right-“you should just follow the sidewalk around the lot in this direction.” Then he waves his left arm off to the other side-“The path that leads to the trail around the summit is over there. It draws to a stop, and a tour guide disembarks, followed by a couple dozen passengers. With no idea where to go, I have achieved not orientation but dis-orientation.Īll at once, beyond my car, in a kind of Harry Potter-like moment, a trolley car emerges out of the fog. I see nothing beyond the walk, no further into the lot than the trunk of my car. I maneuver cautiously into an empty space, get out, and step up onto a paved walkway. The caravan I follow eventually slows to a crawl, and we creep into a hazy oval parking lot. A curtain of thick white vapor rises impenetrably alongside and overhead and yet still thickens. Off the cliff-edge side of the road, beyond the trees and shrubs immediately marking the shoulder, there is no vista, no view, no horizon. Huffing figures on bicycles suddenly appear and disappear along the edge of the pavement. I can see only the taillights and rear bumper of the van in front of me, occasionally discern the headlights of the car behind. The vehicles ahead make slow progress up the curving two-way road. What’s beyond the edges of the road, what the occasional turnouts are designed to overlook-these are mysteries. I move through an opaque haze, aware only of the pavement. Soon the trees beyond the shoulder become indistinct and, as I steadily climb, they disappear altogether. It’s over three miles to the summit, at 1530 feet the highest point not only in the park but also on the Atlantic coastline. Within a tenth of a mile it hangs above the road like a banner stretched between bordering trees. When I start up the access road, near sea level, the fog is thin and transparent, but it soon thickens. Visibility is reasonably good on the shoreline, though circumscribed I think that, however limited my vistas may be up there, at least I’ll see the summit itself. I’m not certain whether I’ve seen Cadillac at all. Throughout the day, it shifts altitude and thickness, sometimes wispy and translucent, sometimes heavy and dense, but always it envelops the peaks. But each time I look, all summits are shrouded in fog. Hiking the headlands above the shore, I gaze inland from time to time in hopes of a clear view, expecting to see it tower above the nearer, lower mountains. I’m unable to see the mountain from afar today. My best chance for that may well be the peak on which the nineteenth-century artist Sanford Gifford painted the vista I’m most familiar with, the view from Cadillac Mountain. I’ve only begun my three weeks as an artist-in-residence at Acadia National Park, and I want to orient myself to the terrain. I drive up Cadillac Mountain on the spur of the moment, after a morning at sea level wandering around Great Head and Sand Beach to get a feel for the Maine coastline. Each door tells a story that extends deeper than the surface of the paint. All that’s required is a paint brush, a can of bright red paint and a brave soul. There are likely variations in the colors on the entire area, as well as within each brick, but the overall brick can be red, coral, orange, pale peach, grey, or even purple toned. What color door is your favorite?īetter yet, do you consider your home a welcoming place? Are you mortgage-free? Maybe painting your front door red should be your next weekend project. You also need to take your own brick’s tone into consideration before starting to look at other colors. This mortgage-free announcement is of course exciting to homeowners and we think it’s worth proclaiming! Even if the public doesn’t know about this hidden meaning, at least it will make the homeowners smile whenever they see their front door.Īpparently the decision to paint a door any sort of color out of the ordinary has a deliberate meaning. More recently, some homeowners - particularly in Scotland - paint their front door red in order to signify that they have paid off their mortgage. Luckily for me the Protestant church around the block is not going to press charges. What I didnt realize is, it is a crime to paint doors black without permission. They could park their horse and buggy in the driveway (or maybe it was called a rideway then) and enjoy a safe and warm night of rest. I went to Home Depot and got some black paint and then went CrAzY I saw a red door and painted it black, per the songs instructions. It would cut out the guessing game and knocking marathon because they knew they could potentially stay the night there. 2.) The Early American Traditionįollowing this same train of hospitality, in an early American tradition, a door painted red was a sign to weary travelers that the home was a safe and welcoming place to rest. Just looking at the color red emits those very feelings it is warm, comfortable and inviting. One of the best qualities that a house can possess is to be welcoming - to make guests feel at home and like there is no deadline for their departure. In Feng Shui, a red front door simply means “welcome.” How appropriate for the very first touchpoint with visitors! I can’t think of a better message to broadcast, which has the potential to speak louder than an actual “welcome” mat. It’s also possible that they may have just had an extra can of red paint lying around and got bored one afternoon! 1.) The Feng Shui Tradition Although there may be more meanings beyond these mentioned, here are a few of the most common reasons why people might paint their front door red. I never once wondered what this brilliant paint move meant or what message is trying to be conveyed.īut like most things, there actually is a deeper meaning to this mini makeover. 'I could not foresee this thing happening to you' - It was an unexpected and sudden death. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss. 'With flowers and my love both never to come back' - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. If you’re like me, you just assumed that those confident homeowners happen to love that certain color, but didn’t feel comfortable committing to painting their entire home bright blue, green, or my favorite in this context - red. 'I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black' - The hearse and limos. Via The Inspired Room Beach House Drive ByĪnd, a little more subdued but still striking, maroon doors.A brightly colored front door adds a fun pop of color to any home and immediately gives it an extra dose of personality. To get inspired, I rounded up a few colorful doors! I think I like the green, the yellow, the orange and a blue. Darn.īut maybe I will finally get to paint my door and the trim around the front door and sidelights? I’d love to paint or stain my whole house a soft gray with white trim like this lovely house of my dreams.īut painting my entire house is definitely not going to happen this year. But what? Black? A pretty color? I’m not sure yet! I love that it works equally well in rooms paired with crisp white, allowing other colors to pop against it, as well as in sultry rooms, where it holds its’ place as the life-source of a finely-tuned color palette.' Kathleen. I’m not really a fan of this particular wood tone on my door so I definitely want to paint it. 'Rich, deep and complex, C2 Paint’s Lavish C2-518 is a most handsome red. As you can see my door is natural wood on the outside, and you might remember I painted it black on the inside. This bypass, diverter valve or three way valve will be controlled by your room thermostat.Ĭonsider a "timed on" 24v relay wired in parallel with the three way valve to close a set of contacts to energize your air handler blower. It is a simple three pipe valve, one to the supply and one to the coil and the other back into the return line giving continual flow of hot water within a few feet of the heating coil. consider a "bypass" or "diverter" valve (24v) piped in the circuit at the air handler (gas furnace in your case). The above aquastat will start and run the pump 24/7 as long at the water is in between on/off temps. Of course this is not needed if you are circulating Propylene Glycol. Parallel those contacts with a simple "outdoor" thermostat that closes on a drop in temp and set that control at 32 degrees to start the pump to get water moving in case of extended "no-fire" time in the middle of winter. What you may consider would be a simple aquastat to turn on the pump when the supply side of the boiler piping warms and off as it cools with diminishing fire. You should NOT even consider an automatic damper in the flu pipe for the above listed reasons.my. When the wood boiler one calls for heat I assume I will wire it so the circulating pump turns on and just the blower fan in the furnace as well.Īm I overlooking anything when it comes to controlling the boiler?Īlso if in the future I wanted to put radiant floor heat in or hot water radiators how do I set up the temp and pump control on that? I assume due to the long time from when it starts heating till the heat is actually felt that a regular thermostat isn't used? I will have two thermostats one that I have now to control the furnace will be set at a low temperature and on for the wood boiler that will be set to the temp I want in the house. I will have to put something between the aquastat and damper controls if the aquastat can't run on 24 volts.įor the furnace I plan to put a heat exchanger in the plenum of my furnace. I already have a couple aquastats(I'm not sure what voltage they are for) and two honeywell 90 degree damper control that are set up for 24 volt. When the aquastat says it is too cold the dampers will open and when it is at the set temp they will close. I plan to use an aquastat to control two dampers, one on the air into the fire box and one on the chimney on the way out of the fire box. My plan is to have it set up with natural draft (no fan blowing into the fire box). I don't have any concerns about building the boiler, my concerns are the controls for it. I think I have it all figured out but figured I would run it past you guys to see if it will work. A hand-forged Japanese knife is a cultural asset that today finds its followers not only in Japan but all over the world. The craft of knifemaking has been perfected and developed over centuries. So the Japanese knife has a long history. Many traditional cutlers still make Katanas, or at least are historically associated with sword making. From this tradition, the production of hand-forged Japanese knives has developed and established itself. Swords have been forged in Japan since the 15th century, the world-famous Katanas. This complex manufacturing process can hardly be copied industrially. Different temperature ranges and processing temperatures must be observed, which is very difficult to learn and master. The blacksmiths are experts in the field of steel processing and combination of clad steel and extremely hard blade steel. Another difference is the craftsmanship behind the product. Due to its sharpness, slipping off or inaccurate cutting is unlikely to happen with a Japanese knife. The sharpness and precision of Japanese knives ultimately also contributes to the safety of the user. European knives, by comparison, often become slippery when damp. Natural wood handles, by the way, have the advantage of gaining a better grip when damp. They can be controlled much easier and more intuitive. The Japanese handles are generally lighter than European handles, the Japanese knives are therefore much better balanced (center of gravity much further towards the tip of the knife compared to European knives, where the center of gravity is often in the handle) and generally more agile and precise. Compared to European knives, Japanese knives can also be recognized by their handle. With one of our knives you acquire a very durable product, which is clearly superior to European knives in terms of functionality (sharpness and edge retention). Does this mean that gangs will reconnect? Shootings, will they start back up again? Can the balance of peace really be kept one, very strange, second year teacher? The climax of this film touches the heart and minds of the viewers, and makes the long rising action worth every minute. The school seems to have finally found peace within itself and room 203, but disaster strikes when we find out that Erin is not allowed to teach junior and senior years, and that her students must go on without her. They are taught to write in a diary, which showed them that it doesn’t matter what is read, but what has been written. Moved by Frank's story, the kids raise money to bring Miep Gies (Pat Carroll), the woman who hid Frank from the Nazis, to campus.Throughout freshman and sophomore year, the students of Erin’s English class find themselves respecting her, and respecting each other, which shocks them all. As the students write about their lives in a "war zone," Erin also has them visit L.A.'s Holocaust museum and read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. They begin to recognize their similarities. So, she has them stand together in the classroom when they've shared an experience, like losing a friend to violence. I hate white people on sight." Erin realizes that since her students self-segregate by race, they never learn one another's stories. "I saw white cops shoot my friend in the back for reaching into his pocket. Finally, one of them - distrustful Eva (April Lee Hernandez) - explains her rage: "White people running this world," she says. Erin is also discouraged by her cynical colleagues but she persists, seeking ways to connect with her students. Erin's first few days at school are daunting: She witnesses a fight, sees a boy pull out a gun, and endures taunts from her students, who see themselves as their other teachers see them: the "ghetto-ass class" unworthy of attention or time. uprising in 1992, aiming to follow in her civil rights activist father's footsteps. In FREEDOM WRITERS, enthusiastic and innocent teacher Erin Gruwell ( Hilary Swank) arrives at a high school in Long Beach just after the L.A. Kids don't need the world hiding from them they need to see it with a little hope sprinkled on to show them how to be better people. Yes there is violence etc but this story tells a truth many kids live so if they have to live it day in day out from a much younger age then a kid watching this in this context that there's more, you can expect better, be better do what's right even when it's dangerous or difficult shouldn't be something to be scared of it should be what we are teaching them. I asked her what she thought at the end of the film and she had this to say" The teacher feels like she can teach them to be kind to each other and respect each other and the children learn to feel like they can be free in that classroom with her and be safe and respect her " so I think it's fair to say she got it and she wasn't traumatised by anything in it but just maybe learnt something about the wider world she lives in. I sat down to watch this film finally today and unexpectedly my little girl 9 who was playing with her Lego sat and watched it with me because it caught her attention. Profanity includes use of the "N" word in a journal entry, and a dramatic use of "f-k you." While the movie is based on a true story, families should take the opportunity to discuss it in the context of the "white savior narrative," and how and why movies like these can be problematic as America comes to grips with the far-reaching effects of systemic racism. Students write about their losses in their journals, which the teacher reads out loud or in voiceover these scenes depict memories of shootings (including a young boy accidentally shooting himself and dying on a park bench), and domestic abuse. Students discuss the Holocaust, Anne Frank, and meet a survivor who describes her ordeal. Kids argue with each other, including a scene in which characters use racial slurs to describe Asians. Gang violence, loss of a friend or family member, and the Holocaust are addressed. One of the characters is shown getting beaten up in a gang initiation. Characters are killed in drive-by shootings. The movie is set in a Long Beach, California high school in the mid-1990s against the backdrop of deep racial tensions in the aftermath of the Rodney King beating by police officers.
